Asian water monitors are expert swimmers and climbers! With their powerful tails and strong legs, they move seamlessly between land, trees, and water, making them one of the most versatile reptiles in the animal kingdom.
These reptiles are scavengers and predators, helping to keep ecosystems balanced. They feed on insects, rodents, and carrion, making them essential for maintaining a healthy environment.
Built-In Snorkels
Asian water monitors have long, slender nostrils positioned close to the tip of their snouts. This design lets them breathe while keeping most of their body submerged, just like a natural snorkel! Don’t let their size fool you—Asian water monitors are incredibly fast on land and in the water, reaching speeds of up to 28 km/h (17 mph). If startled, they can dive and disappear in seconds!
Communication Through the Air
With their forked tongues, Asian water monitors “taste” the air to gather information about their surroundings. This incredible ability helps them locate food and detect potential threats from far away.
